Works of Contemplation
(1954~1970)
He got back the will to paint that he had lost from the war and even held a few solo exhibitions. However, at the same time, he started to think of painting as a “means of contemplation” rather than as “something to show.” From 1959, he ceased to make his paintings public and worked on them by listening to his heart.
Works of Faith
(1970~2004)
While working on painting, after many twists and turns, he was baptized into the Catholic faith. Faith was the main theme of his works and supported his style. Some works were commissioned by churches and monasteries.
The Series of a Little Symphony
on the Plateau
(1974~2004)
This series was born from his experiences in nature in Mukaiyama Plateau where he lived after the war. The bright light and wind overflowing in the mountains and fields, as well as the scent of the earth, later became expressed through a “Symphony” of colors after he moved to Hachinohe, resulting in a series of over 1,300 works
until his passing.
Small pieces (size F0) are available for limited sale at the museum shop (domestic delivery only).
We will donate 10% of our profits to the Japan Committee for UNICEF.
「Sogen Gakan」
(1985~2003)
The experience of sending men of the same generation off on kamikaze suicide missions during the war left scars in his heart that became even deeper after he found faith. At the age of 64, he began a painting project using large-format paper (1.5m×10m per roll)that he joined together as he progressed. His purpose was to go up the great river of sorrows and to ask God, who was the source of all, to teach us the true meaning of human sorrow and grief. At the age of 83, he finally completed “Sogen Gakan” as a 36-roll, 360-meter long picture scroll. Its subtitle is
“A Record of Poured Love, Sin, and Sorrow.”
